The Philosophy of Hamburgers
for Michael Kocinski

I don’t care what anyone says. The world is beautiful,

and happiness hits when you least expect it,

like tonight, at Wendy’s, eating alone,

ten feet away from perfect strangers,

a Black man writing earnestly in a journal,

two white high school girls chatting behind me,

this huge delicious burger in my hand,

and a whole morning tomorrow to talk about poetry.

The only thing you can do is praise –

the sheer joy of being alive, the miracle of it.

Where else do you get cold nights

when you can’t feel your fingers,

warm rooms to thaw in and read,

beautifully irritating students and friends who juggle oranges,

teachers who talk about Hesiod and freedom.

This fantastic place, this world –

where you get whatever you put in,

where you can choose to be happy.

All it takes is a huge hamburger,

some terrible music playing overhead,

a cold January night.

Once again I wanting to thank everyone around me,

to say thank you, thank you, thank you…

Happy new year to all you people who are reading this.a new year is upon us and we have nothing better to do but to learn something new, be good to each other and take care of everything we need to take care of whether it be ourselves, the earth, finding new ways to drive our big expensive cars, or clean up the messes that we've made. whether it be our lives or someone elses lives or the world that we live in. think for yourselves when you think...and please think often. we bring you the winter issue of splat art magazine. no this issue probably clean up anything but it may want you to learn something new or to help someone out that is learning something new. it may even inspire you to to buy some art...or better yet buy some of the art from an artist that is in here. it may even make you like poetry. i guess basically what i'm getting at is the new year is the place and time for a new beginning, so you messed up last year..well learn and don't mess up this year..but probably the year after one of us will mess up again...probably me...or maybe you. the trick of the trade is to know when we get a fresh start and to make the most out of it. too many people don't get off their arses and try new things, they don't try to create the ideas that are in their head..instead they sit around..some complain..some drink to an alarming excess and most are sad or unhappy. don't let this be you and i will do my best to make that no t be me..you got my word on that. speak your mind and put your best foot forward. so happy reading and happy viewing this delicious eye candy.

Chicago,IL—The HumanThreadCenter in Pilsen’s Chicago Arts District is joined by artists AaronWooten and CJ Hungerman this January for the next exhibition in itsthought-provoking series. Celebrating a culture of peace,HumanThread expresses Chicago’s creative culture by curatingmonthly exhibitions that discuss issues of cultural identity andsocial importance.

2012:Abundant Affliction,which runs January 9-30, is a provocative collection of work by AaronWooten and CJ Hungerman emphasizing the absurd but common practicesof governments and institutions that inflict rote discontentthroughout society. The exhibition juxtaposes the distinctivelydivergent styles that Wooten and Hungerman employ to address theissues afflicting society. Wooten’s political satire has anostalgic presence that criticizes current affairs while Hungerman’smechanical motifs express the tedious and unfulfilling roles weassume that create stress and dissatisfaction in our individualexistences.

Theopening reception is January 13 from 6-10PM in association with TheChicago Arts Districts 2^ndFriday Gallery Night. The exhibition is open by appointment January9-30.

Aaron Wooten and CJ Hungerman are local Chicagoartists. After pursuing a film degree, Wooten discovered painting in2002 and has since exhibited in many festivals and exhibitions inChicago. Hungerman earned a MFA in Painting and Design from NorthernIllinois University and currently works as an independent artist anddesigner in a variety of media including drawing, printmaking, streetart and installation.

we are still alive here at splat art magazine..sorry for no new posts for this past issue...i must admit i kind of got caught up in summer...something about the warm sun and skateboards and bikes and all other kinds of exhilarating things that grabbed my attention from this computer. the new issue will be out soon and will be a bit bigger i do believe...and look forward to a new book that i am working on with my friend jeff stewart that will be out in the novemberish area...aahhh coldness time frame.

Michael Kocinski is the featured poet of this issue...we are good friends and have collaborated on many projects...even playing music on stage (him on harmonica)....so it just seemed fitting to ask him to work on this magazine with me. this poem is grackles by michael kocinski.

Grackles
for Bob Philips

I think they must all have been
heavy equipment operators or
veteran farmers in their past lives.
It's the way they walk,

I imagine their lunch-pail swagger,
the irridescent grease and oil stains
on thick cotton work blues,
the metallic sheen of daily blue jeans.

They rolled when they walked
back then, too, favoring distressed
joints and muscles wracked by use.
Still, their eyes did glint and shine

with avian brightness under buzzing
fluorescent tubes and sunlight hung
by chains from ceiling or sky.

Now they wander lawns, heads cocked,
purple tongues in the garden lapping up
windfall mulberries, glittering insects,
seeds, even bits of stone and metal,

singing their guttural odes in choruses.
No human memory troubles their minds,
you can see it in their eyes, round and
bright as rivets in a pair of bib overalls.
